A pressure test with hose inspection is how a cooling system gets checked properly: the system is pressurised cold to reveal leaks, and every hose is felt and flexed for the softness that comes before a burst. Call 704-842-9774.
We bring the pressure tester to the vehicle and check the whole system, not just the part that is visible from above.
Finds It Before It Strands You
A hose that has gone soft or crazed will fail under pressure on a hot day. Feeling it now is the whole point of the test.
Best Done In Spring
Call 704-842-9774 before the hot months. Cooling system failures here cluster in summer traffic.
Cold system pressurised to its rated figure, pressure held and watched for loss, every hose checked by hand, the cap tested separately, then the coolant condition assessed.
1
Give us the year, make and model. Some engines have hoses that are known to fail early, and knowing the vehicle means we check those first.
2
You get told whether the system held pressure, which hoses are still sound, which are softening, and what condition the coolant and the cap are in.
3
Anything that fails the test gets quoted, and if you want it dealt with in the same visit we can usually replace hoses, clamps and caps on the spot.
Cooling failures in this climate rarely give a warning. A test that takes half an hour is the difference between a planned hose and a roadside overheat.
Heat ages rubber, and Charlotte supplies plenty of it. The city logged 72 days at or above 90 degrees this past summer against a normal of 44, with feels-like readings past 105 during heat advisories, and underhood temperatures sit far above ambient. Hoses harden, then craze, then split, and the split almost always comes on a hot day under load rather than on a cool morning. The worst place to discover it is traffic, on Independence Boulevard or in the I-77 merge north of Remount Road, where there is no airflow through the radiator and an engine loses its coolant in seconds. A pressure test with a proper hose inspection finds the weak component while it is still just a hose rather than a tow and a head gasket.
A cooling system only reaches its designed boiling point because it is sealed and held under pressure. That means a weak cap or a hose seeping a small amount can lower the boiling point enough for a system to overheat at a temperature it should handle without effort, and it will do that on the hottest day rather than on a cool one. A pressure test applies that pressure with the engine cold and holds it, so a loss shows up as a reading rather than as steam at the roadside.
The hoses get inspected at the same time, by feel as much as by eye. A hose that has gone hard, or one that has swollen soft near a clamp, is at the end of its life even if it is not leaking yet, and both failures happen suddenly rather than gradually. Replacing one on a driveway is a small job; having one let go in traffic is not.
The findings that come up most often on a Charlotte pressure test, and what each one means.
A system that loses pressure slowly with no visible drip. Very common. The leak is small enough to evaporate off a hot engine, and the pressure gauge is the only thing that sees it.
A radiator cap that will not hold its rated pressure, or an upper hose gone soft. The cap is a cheap part that quietly lowers the boiling point of the whole system, and heat-aged rubber is on its way to splitting. Both cost a fraction during a test compared with what they cost once they let go in traffic.
Common questions about pressure testing: what the test shows, how long it takes, and when it is worth doing.

Cars, SUVs, light trucks and vans of all makes. Heavier trucks go through our truck repair service.
2
If the coolant level keeps dropping, if the engine has run hot, or as a spring check before the hot months. Call 704-842-9774 with your vehicle details.
3
The whole cooling circuit held under pressure, every accessible hose checked by hand, the clamps, the pressure cap tested on its own, and the condition and type of the coolant.

Around half an hour on most vehicles, assuming the engine is cool enough to start. A slow leak needing UV dye takes longer, because the dye has to circulate before it shows.
